09/19/08: Once upon a time...

M: ... you needed your Windows discs for all installations. And hard drive defragmentation was actually fun.

I suspect this strip won't appeal to too many people, but I like it anyway. Opening up that (fully functional) tomb of ancient data, I felt like the guys
who discovered the burial chamber of an Egyptian pharaoh - only without the mummies, curses etc.

After the initial problems ("Windows 98 CD? I think we threw that one away, years ago...") we managed to install a dusty network card - now we're
anxiously awaiting the DSL activation next week. Also, after the Windows disc reappeared, we plugged in the heretofore totally useless USB speakers,
and - lo and behold - we had sound, without a sound card! These technological wonders will never cease to impress me...

Apart from that, we treated ourselves to a defragmentation run of the hard disk. Wow, I really miss that one. Does anyone even remember the "details"
window, where you witnessed the block-by-block removal and copying of data? It was totally satisfying to see eight scattered blocks be rearranged
into one packagage. I, for one, could watch that for hours without ever getting bored. Fortunately, it doesn't take that long to check a 2-gig drive...
